The Bountiful Router Increases Efficiency and Mobility for PR Professionals at

Snapp Norris Group

Background:

Today’s business climate demands flexibility and adaptability. The idea of “mobility”

goes hand-in-hand with these requirements, as employees of successful companies seem

to be constantly on the go. Meetings, briefings, conference calls and other happenings fill

their schedules and necessitate that they move quickly and efficiently from one location

to another. As employees travel from their personal office to the conference room to coworkers’

offices and back to their own, they must often take critical data with them.

Nowadays the bulk of business data finds its home on company servers that can be

accessed via the company’s network. Employees usually utilize this data on their laptop

computers or tablets that can be transferred easily from place to place. But this kind of

movement requires a network that is equally flexible and adaptable.

Wired networks, while generally reliable, do not allow for easy mobility. Fixed access

points make it difficult to transfer data without losing the connection to the network.

Wireless LAN networks, however, can make this transition seamless, contingent upon the

strength and reliability of the wireless signal.

For the PR professionals at Snapp Norris Group (SNG), a strategic public relations

agency, mobility and efficiency are vital. Appointments with clients, proposal

presentations to prospective clients, staff meetings and other events require the

employees to switch locations – from office to conference room to the “brainstorming

area” to the media library – multiple times throughout the day. In many cases they need

to do so while still maintaining a connection to the office network.

The company’s wired network did not allow for a smooth transition from one location to

another. Rather, the connection was inevitably broken each time an employee had to

move their personal laptop to another room in the office and then reconnect in the new

location. In order to remedy this problem, SNG sought a way to create a wireless network

that would provide the same reliability as the wired network while giving employees the

added benefit of mobility throughout the building.

Challenge:

The SNG offices are housed on the first floor of a 20,000 square-foot building in Salt

Lake City, Utah. In order to create a wireless network that would efficiently service the

company’s team of public relations associates and the office management, IT Manager

Scott Davidson needed to find a wireless solution that could provide a coverage area

large enough to encompass the entire office, a strong and reliable wireless signal and fast

performance. Furthermore, he needed a solution that would provide all these benefits at a

reasonable cost.

In the past, Davidson had chosen not to install wireless routers in SNG’s offices for a

variety of reasons. The available options were “low-power” routers that would require

him to install multiple units, increasing the cost of implementing a wireless network.

Additionally, the use of multiple units would entail more administration for Davidson, in

terms of set-up, maintenance and management of the routers. He also refrained from

installing wireless routers because he was not convinced that they provided adequate

security features. This combination of factors led Davidson to wait until he found a

wireless solution that fulfilled all of his criteria.

Solution:

This solution came in the form of the Bountiful Router, the first product in a line of

wireless LAN technologies from Bountiful WiFi. The Bountiful Router provides a

stronger, cleaner, more pervasive and reliable wireless signal than any other router. Its

key differentiator in a wireless network is its ability to cover a wireless footprint area that

is two to four times greater than the coverage area of any other available wireless

solution.

“Throughout the entire office it’s excellent, it’s at full-strength,” said Davidson. “I’ve

used a couple of network “sniffer” technologies to determine the signal strength. I’ve

moved throughout the entire office and do not lose strength whatsoever. In fact, with the

Bountiful Router I can sit outside of our office windows and actually connect to the

Internet.”

The Bountiful Router’s huge coverage area, and the accompanying signal strength and

consistency, are a product of its innovative design. Due to this technology, the router can

operate at the highest power level currently allowed by the FCC for wireless routers.

Most wireless routers operate at a level of between 15 and 17 dBm, but the Bountiful

Router operates at nearly 30 dBm.

Davidson also appreciated many of the Bountiful Router’s practical features: it is

compatible with the 802.11 b + g standard; it is a simple turnkey solution that provides

the benefits of an extended coverage area without using boosters, amplifiers, extenders or

repeaters; and it has huge built-in “ears” that enable it to hear the clients. The Bountiful

Router also laid Davidson’s security fears to rest. It includes a variety of rich network

security mechanisms, among them support for WPA and WEP encryption.

Perhaps most importantly, the cost of the Bountiful Router (MSRP $625) appealed to

Davidson. He had previously looked at purchasing routers in the $600-$800 range, but

their smaller coverage areas would have necessitated the installation of more than twice

as many units.

“I would have needed two units for the main SNG office and at least three or four for the

building if I hadn’t gone with the Bountiful Router,” said Davidson. “Moreover, I would

have needed to install them in the ceiling. But the Bountiful Router is so powerful that I

don’t need to go to those lengths to get great wireless coverage.”

During the installation process, Davidson discovered that the Bountiful Router lived up to

its promise of ease of use. It took only three minutes, from start to finish, to install.

“It’s a lot faster than most devices I’ve seen,” said Davidson. “The interface is quick. To

reboot the device is quicker. The setup on most devices usually takes a minute but with

this device it took a matter of seconds.”

And that speed has carried over into the Bountiful Router’s day-to-day functioning in the

office, as well.

“It really has been quicker responding to network requests,” said Davidson. “When I start

up the laptop it makes that connection faster. It has a better, more reliable connection to

our network than any other wireless router would provide. In fact, I’ve seen the same

level of performance with the Bountiful Router that I’ve seen with the wired network.”

Conclusion:

The creation of a wireless network in the SNG offices has brought new benefits to the

public relations professionals whose jobs rely largely on having fast, reliable access to the

company’s network.

“The Bountiful Router has brought the benefits of mobility and efficiency to the

employees at SNG,” said Davidson. “With this wireless network in place people are able

to perform their job functions faster and more ‘on-the-fly.’”

The expanded coverage area, the reliability of the wireless signal, the speed of the

connection and the reasonable cost – these factors combine to make the Bountiful Router

an ideal solution for Snapp Norris Group and businesses of all sizes.
